Genealogy News - Bull Family Genealogist Judy Wood

March 2020 - The Bull Family Genealogy Committee reached a new milestone! 90,000 names recorded and a personal goal for Judy Wood, our family Genealogist, doubling the 45,000 names she started with in 2006. This could not have happened without the multitude of hours of research by the dedicated volunteers on the Genealogy committee. We found a letter written in 1984 from an unknown Bull cousin, Phillip Smart, from Ontario, Canada. He was from the line of Mary Bull Booth, whose son Joshua went to Ontario, Canada and had a family of 12 children, only one of which was recorded in the Bull Blue Book in 1974 (pg 183).  This led to adding over 2500 names to the line of Mary, making her the largest of the 7 female lines.  Phillip Smart told a story, that Mary Bull Booth traveled with her slaves to Canada after the death of her husband (in 1783) to deliver Joshua his portion of his father’s estate.  Mary lived in Onondaga County, NY with her other children, until her death in 1819.
The other line that we are still working on, is Esther Bull Miller.  We have been searching the Hornbrook/Hardenbrook families and adding many generations to the Bull records (See Bull Blue Book pages  452-453)
You can help by filling in a Family Group Record below or email Judy: judy@bullstonehouse.org or via mail to

What's in Our Bull DNA?

Three of our male Bull cousins recently had their DNA tested at the Ancestry laboratory. Each cousin did a swab test from the inside of their mouth which contains a complete copy of their genetic blueprint. They each sent their swabs into the lab where a 46 marker test was performed to find their paternal DNA which is passed basically unchanged from father to son. We learned that all 3 Bull cousins matched on all 46 markers exactly, which means they all come from the same Bull line and now we have our own Bull group. Our Haplotype is J2a1b, which means that our ancient ancestors came from the fertile crescent area (presently this area is Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iraq) and migrated into Europe about 5,000 years ago. What do we hope to glean from these DNA results? Our Bull family has wondered for years if we are connected to the South Carolina Bulls (Stephen & Barnaby Bull who emigrated from England in 1670) or the Connecticut or Albany, NY area Bull line. If these other Bull lines have their DNA tested we may be able to prove, or disprove, if we have a common ancestor. Select the DNA strand to view the test results.
